![]() Those tracks are the reason “Lights Out” is not quite up to par as “Jailbreak,” yet its strongest moments solidify it as an essential Hard Rock staple. On a record full of strengths that plays well to its genre, the only points of weakness can be found on “Try Me,” which is definitely not a manly power ballad and thus is grossly out of place, and “Alone Again Or,” which would be better suited on an early Journey album. “Just Another Suicide,” “Getting Ready,” and “Electric Phase” are pretty much interchangeable, up-tempo riff rockers that could have easily landed on 70’s rock radio. the blueprint for any memorable classic rock ballad. ![]() “Love To Love” is one of those 7 minute ballads that consistently changes between rocking out and getting sensitive, i.e. The remaining album is in a similar vein, with layers of pop and big time power ballads thrown in the mix. “Lights Out” the song is an exercise in titanic guitar riffs and solos, and album opener “Too Hot To Handle” is about 97% as awesome. Females don’t jam UFO or Thin Lizzy, and therein lays the quintessential difference. Mainly, the style of big-time riffage, catchy choruses, and a slight pop feel that was still gritty enough to qualify as a manly grilling album, as opposed to KISS, who employed a similar style but had the misfortune of the fact that 64% of their fans menstruate on a monthly basis. This isn’t to say that UFO was as awesome as Thin Lizzy, but there is a strong correlation between their styles. Throughout the album, UFO combines heavy, riff-driven tracks with more melodic and atmospheric songs, creating a dynamic and cohesive listening experience. If more people outside of England had actually heard “Lights Out,” UFO and Schenker would be on the same household name recognition level as fellow badass Phil Lynott. Although prima-donna guitar players are a dime a dozen and most of them can shred when they feel like it, Schenker was a riff monster and laid down some totally face-melting solos. Michael Schenker is pretty much known for three things: being the dude who co-founded the Scorpions, encompassing the virtues of raging alcoholism and being a massive prick on-stage, and writing the totally badass song/album “Lights Out.” Schenker is not quite a legend in the annals of rock history, although he probably should be. Verdict: Strong record with good songs and loads of variety.Review Summary: Hard charging 70's Hard Rock on par with Thin Lizzy Then there's "Alone Again Or" which I thought was an odd sock in the basket, sounding like some old 60s tune (til I looked it up and saw it was a Love cover). "Electric Phase" has a strong attitude and vibe as does "Too Hot To Handle". Album High Stakes & Dangerous Men / Lights Out In Tokyo 26 tracks. "Just Another Suicide" and "Getting Ready" are solid, radio-friendly Classic Rock ala BTO (former) and Tom Pertty (latter) while the somber "Try Me" is a really good melancholic piano ballad. Get to know the best songs by UFO: discover his greatest hits and enjoy his complete. Song to song, it's a pretty diverse album.which is cool. It has a cool, dark and moody vibe to it and kind of reminds me of Pink Floyd in places with the moody build-ups and airy atmosphere. What a nice slice of Heavy Metal that is! "Love To Love" is another standout track to my ears. The original version here rocks! It kind of reminds me of Rainbow with its organ and galloping tempo. I first heard the title track when it was covered by Fifth Angel, and I only heard that 6 or 7 years ago. So, in my quest to discover bands and albums I overlooked early on, this time I chose Lights Out. I even used to own a found copy of Obsession on vinyl when I was in 10th grade, but can only recall "Only You Can Rock Me" (cool song) from it (it was stolen from me in later years). ![]() I knew that they are revered in UK Rock and Metal circles. I knew Michael Schenker used to play guitar with them. ![]()
